Tapela Nu Shaak

Tapela nu Shaak is a very famous Surati recipe. It is prepared on many festive occasions. This particular recipe is genearations old and is originally made with goat meat. It is cooked in a single pot with other ingredients and spices, hence the name ‘Tapela nu Shaak’. Tapelu means pot and Shaak means Sabji. For the vegetarian version which is also as famous as then non-vegetarian version Chana Dal wadas are prepared and added to the recipe. This is a very spicy unique recipe and I am sure you will definitely give it a try. If you are a non vegetarian, you can add meat according to your liking. This recipe won’t disappoint you! Ingredients

Method

Wada

1.

Add Chana dal, green chilies, ginger, garlic, cilantro, mint, salt, hing and turmeric powder.

2.

Using very little water if needed make a paste.

3.

Next take small portion and deep fry in oil on medium heat.

Vegetables

1.

Cut potatoes in small cubes.

2.

Deep fry potatoes and peas in the same oil.

Gravy

1.

Add onions and tomatoes to a mixer jar and make a fine paste.

2.

Next Heat oil in a pan and add the prepared paste to it. Cook the paste.

3.

Now add Tapela Shaak no masalo and salt.

4.

Cook while stirring occasionally until oil starts to separate.

5.

Add in fried vegetables and corn. Mix everything and cook for a minute.

6.

Then add 2 cups of water and bring it to boil.

7.

Lastly add the prepared wada and cook for another minute.

8.

Serve with roti or paratha.

Notes

1. If using corn on the cob boil it before adding to the shaak.

2. Add more water if needed as the wadas will absorb a lot of water.

3. If you don’t have Tapela ma Shaak no masalo, mix 1 tsp red chili powder, 1/2 tsp turmeric powder, 1/2 tsp cumin powder, 1 tsp garam masala, 1 tsp kashmiri red chili powder in a bowl and use.
